The "Close the Tab" Rule That Made Me Better at Using AI

I used to keep AI tabs open forever. "I'll come back to this later," I'd tell myself. Weeks would pass. The tab would sit there, growing stale, until I'd eventually close it without ever revisiting.

Then I made a rule: if a conversation is worth keeping, I export it before I close the tab. If it's not worth exporting, it's not worth keeping open.

Simple rule. Changed everything.

It forced me to be more intentional about which conversations mattered. Not every chat deserves to be saved. But the ones that do? They get a proper home — organized, searchable, accessible long after the browser tab is gone.

I use XWX AI Chat Exporter for this. One click, clean PDF with clickable table of contents. Works across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek, and Grok. The free tier gives you 3 PDF exports per day, and Markdown is unlimited.

The rule also changed how I use AI during conversations. Knowing I might revisit this later makes me push for better answers, ask follow-up questions, and dig deeper instead of settling for the first response.

Close the tab. But only after you've saved what matters.
