Hi reader, thanks for clicking on my article. Who am I? As someone once called me, I prefer to say I am the "son of a nobody"—and I am actually proud of that. My grandparents had nothing; they worked the dirt and struggled to make ends meet. Coming from a humble family, I am the first person in my entire family tree to get a degree. And guess what? I went on to get a Ph.D. So, what should I call myself now? A doctor? Yes, maybe. But above all, I am Alberto: an underdog. An underdog Ph.D.
I have a Ph.D. I’ve been a researcher, a software developer, and I’ve hustled through multiple jobs. Yet, right now, I am unemployed. In my country (Italy), a Ph.D. is often treated as a penalty rather than an asset. The lack of recognition for research and hard work in this system is deeply frustrating.
For a moment, it broke me. But I refuse to let a broken system dictate my worth.
I decided to bounce back using the two weapons I trust the most: pure math and computer science. To survive the tough times, I’ve always relied on training as well — keeping my mind, heart, soul, and body alive under the burdens.
So, I merged my two lifelines: mental and physical. I built a mathematical physiology engine for data-obsessed athletes. It’s not just another calorie tracker. It’s a web app that algorithmically models and graphs the exact curves of Insulin peak depletion and Muscle Protein Synthesis (MPS) in real-time, based on what you eat.
MyoBro is a prediction system based on the mathematical calculation of curves derived from your specific meals. It solves differential equations and makes predictions based on parameters derived from scientific literature. The pharmacokinetic and equation constants have been optimized to make the predictions as close as possible to experimental studies conducted on healthy subjects. While the mathematical and predictive models form its skeleton, which may be difficult to understand, MyoBro’s calibration is evidence-based. MyoBro is scientifically validated.
Building this engine has been my lifeline lately which felt like a long night, also during the day. Despite the darkness of these moments, I realized that we can code our own way out of the dark.
I know it’s a very niche tool, but if you click with me, if you love data, or if you simply know what it means to fight for your place in the world... I would be honored to have you test it and give me your feedback.
Being an underdog is about dreaming when reality tells you to stop. It’s about community.
