Personalisation in Shopify Mobile Apps: What's Actually Possible (2026)
Last updated: May 2026 | Reading time: 8 minutes
Personalisation is the most overused word in ecommerce tech marketing and the most underimplemented capability in most Shopify apps. This guide covers what personalisation actually means in a native Shopify app — what's possible, and what separates template builders from bespoke native apps.
The levels of personalisation
Level 1: Basic segmentation. Dividing your notification list by static attributes — category of last purchase, gender, geographic region. Most template app builders support this.
Level 2: Behavioural segmentation. Targeting customers based on what they've done recently — products viewed, categories browsed, abandoned cart content. Available in more sophisticated template builders and all bespoke native apps.
Level 3: Predictive personalisation. Using purchase history patterns to predict likely next purchases or optimal send timing. Requires purchase history data and a rules engine.
Level 4: Individual product recommendations. Showing specific products based on individual purchase and browse history. Requires a recommendation engine built into the app's product discovery layer.
What you can personalise in a Shopify app
Push notification content. Instead of "New arrivals just dropped," a customer who has bought blue knitwear twice receives: "New knitwear in your colour just arrived — including a new shade of navy." Same send, different message, dramatically higher conversion.
Home screen product feed. Show different products based on purchase history and browsing behaviour rather than the same default collection to everyone.
Replenishment timing. Product-specific re-order reminders timed to the consumption cycle. This requires knowing when the customer last bought a specific SKU and the typical usage period.
Wishlist price-drop alerts. When a wishlisted item goes on sale: "Your saved Linen Trousers are now 20% off." This is the personalised notification type with the highest purchase intent from the recipient.
Template vs bespoke personalisation capability
Template builders support Level 1 and some Level 2. Levels 3 and 4 require custom engineering — purchase history API integration, a recommendation algorithm, and a dynamic content delivery system. This is bespoke native app territory.
