Shopify Mobile App Store Optimization (ASO): Getting Found in the App Store (2026)

App Store Optimization for Shopify Brands: A Practical Guide (2026)

Last updated: May 2026 | Reading time: 9 minutes

Getting your Shopify app built and submitted is step one. Getting it discovered by customers — through App Store search, editorial features, and browse discovery — is a different challenge entirely. This guide covers App Store Optimization (ASO) specifically for Shopify ecommerce apps.

Why ASO matters for Shopify apps

Most Shopify brands think about their mobile app as a channel for existing customers. But App Store browse and search is also a real acquisition channel for retail apps. Customers searching "UK fashion app" or "sustainable clothing app" in the App Store are discovery-intent searches with less competition than Google.

Your App Store listing also affects install rates from paid channels. A strong listing converts ad clicks into installs. A weak listing wastes media spend.

The App Store ranking factors

App name and subtitle. The app name (30 characters) and subtitle (30 characters) are the highest-weighted keyword fields. Include your brand name in the title and use the subtitle for keyword-rich secondary descriptions.

Keywords field. Apple gives you 100 characters of keyword field. Use these to cover category terms, competitor adjacencies, and long-tail searches.

Ratings and reviews. Volume and recency of ratings matter. Apps with 4.7+ ratings and 100+ reviews rank higher in browse discovery.

Conversion rate from listing page. How many people who view your App Store listing actually tap Install? Screenshots, preview video, and rating are the primary conversion levers.

App Store listing elements

Screenshots (up to 10 on iOS)

Screenshots are the highest-converting element of your App Store listing.

  • Use lifestyle imagery, not product grids
  • Lead with your strongest commercial hook
  • Use contemporary device mockups
  • Include captions explaining each feature

Ratings and review strategy

Target 4.7+ average rating with 100+ reviews within the first 3 months.

Time review prompts:

  • After a successful delivery
  • After a positive support interaction
  • After their second purchase
