Shopify Plus brands have specific mobile app requirements that differ from standard Shopify brands. The additional APIs, checkout customisation options, and data access available to Plus merchants change what's possible in a native app build.
What Shopify Plus adds for mobile apps
Checkout Extensibility on Plus. Plus merchants have access to custom checkout fields, post-purchase upsell steps, and checkout UI extensions. In a native app context, Checkout Kit on Plus can be configured with custom checkout steps unavailable on standard Shopify.
Shopify Functions. Custom server-side logic — custom discount logic, custom shipping calculations, custom cart transforms. In a mobile app, Functions power custom bundle pricing, tiered discount logic, and complex promotional mechanics.
Multipass. A feature enabling seamless SSO between external systems and Shopify. For brands with existing customer accounts in a CRM or loyalty platform, Multipass enables native app authentication without requiring a separate Shopify account creation step.
B2B / Wholesale capabilities. The Plus B2B API enables a native app to serve both DTC and wholesale customers — retail customers see DTC pricing, wholesale customers see negotiated pricing and order minimums.
Higher API rate limits. Enables more responsive real-time inventory, pricing, and personalisation data in the native app.
Template apps vs bespoke for Shopify Plus
Template app builders have limited Plus-specific capability:
- Checkout extensibility is partially supported but restricted
- Shopify Functions outcomes may not surface correctly in template checkouts
- Multipass is not supported in template builders
- B2B wholesale features are not available
For Plus brands where these capabilities are commercially relevant, a bespoke native app is the only way to fully exploit the Plus investment.
